    3. Rhodium Plating Phoenix

    Rhodium Plating Phoenix

Quantum Qarat is proud to offer the following jewelry services:

    Learn about Rhodium Plating

If your white gold ring has developed a warm, faintly yellow cast — usually first on the underside of the band or around the shoulders — nothing has gone wrong. You are seeing the gold underneath.

White gold is not naturally white. It is yellow gold alloyed with white metals to lighten it, and the bright silvery finish you bought comes from a microscopically thin layer of rhodium plated over the top. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal, exceptionally hard and genuinely white, but the layer is measured in microns and it wears. On a ring worn every day, that typically begins to show within a year or two. Replating is routine maintenance, not a repair.

    What the process involves

The piece is cleaned thoroughly first — plating over residue traps it permanently, so this step matters more than it sounds. Any polishing that is needed happens before plating, because polishing afterwards simply removes the new layer. The piece then goes into an electroplating bath where a fresh rhodium layer is deposited across the whole surface.

The result is a uniform bright white finish over the entire piece, including the areas that had worn back to yellow.

What to know before you book

    • It is a finish, not a permanent change. The metal underneath is still yellow-toned gold, and the plating will wear again. How quickly depends entirely on how you wear it.
    • Some stones do not tolerate the process. Pearls, opals, emeralds and other porous or treated stones may need to be removed first, or may rule plating out altogether. We assess this before starting.
    • It will not hide structural problems. A worn prong is still a worn prong under a bright finish. We check the setting as part of the work and will flag anything needing prong repair.
    • Platinum does not need it. Platinum develops a patina rather than losing a coating, so it is polished, not plated. If you are unsure which metal you have, bring it in and we will tell you.

    Making it last

Take rings off before cleaning, swimming or using hand sanitizer — chlorine and alcohol-based products are hard on plating. Take them off at the gym, where the wear is mechanical rather than chemical. And have the piece cleaned properly rather than scrubbed at home.

Rhodium plating pairs naturally with cleaning and inspection, since the piece is already off your hand and on the bench. Book an appointment to have yours looked at.
