Tip And Prong Repair Phoenix
Learn about Tip & Prong Repair
Prongs are the smallest structural component in most jewelry and they do the hardest job. Four to six slivers of metal, each perhaps half a millimeter across at the tip, holding a stone against a lifetime of knocks, snags and hand-washing. They wear. It is not a defect — it is the expected outcome of wearing a ring every day for years.
The failure mode is what makes this urgent. Prongs do not usually break all at once. They thin gradually until one catches on something and bends, and then the stone has play, and then one morning it is gone. Retipping a worn prong is a modest bench job. Replacing a lost center diamond is not.
How to tell whether yours need attention
- The stone moves or clicks when you tap the ring gently against your palm
- Prongs catch persistently on knitwear, hair or upholstery
- Seen from the side, the prong tips look flattened or pointed rather than rounded over the stone
- There is a visible gap between the prong tip and the surface of the stone
- The ring has been worn daily for several years and has never been checked
What retipping involves
We add new metal to the worn tip, shape it back over the girdle of the stone, and finish it so it sits smooth against the surface. Where a prong has worn too far to build on, we replace it outright. Where several have gone, it is sometimes better to rebuild the whole head than to patch each one — we will tell you which situation you are in and why.
Stones come out where the work requires it and go back in tightened and checked. On older pieces we take extra care, because vintage settings often use thinner metal than modern equivalents and do not tolerate aggressive handling. That work sits closer to restoration than to routine repair.
The honest advice
If you take one thing from this page: have your prongs checked once a year. It costs very little, it takes a few minutes, and it is the single most effective thing you can do to avoid losing a stone. We do it as part of cleaning and inspection.
If a stone already feels loose, stop wearing the piece and book an appointment. It is a much smaller problem today than it will be next week.
